Strata: Private & Shared Notes for Micro.blog

• Manton announced a new Notes feature and app, Strata, to support it
• this going to be very handy for editing a post while it’s still a “work in progress”!
• I downloaded the app
  • first authorization failed but second worked
• this is an excellent 1.0 release!

Questions

• shared authoring?
• how to share a note with someone?
  • Strata: contextual menu (press-and-hold) on the item in the list of notes, choose Share
  • web: Share button in web view of the note (changes to Unshare) provides a URL that anyone can use/share but not able to guess (security by obscurity)
• how to view a note in formatted form (vs raw Markdown)?
  • Strata: contextual menu (press-and-hold) on the item in the list of notes, choose Open and it appears in a browser window inside Strata
  • can see it in the web view if the note is short enough (otherwise share it and follow that link?)
• where is documentation?
  • Here in future
• best way to use it with Drafts?
• API docs?
  • probably going to show up in Help/Developers/

• I wonder if people will use this for the equivalent of newsletters (as an additional alternative to the current feature allowing you to push out a weekly compendium of all your blog posts)?
• had an outage of the sharing function on Wednesday (21.Feb.2024) that lasted at least several hours but didn’t hear back what caused it

Wishes

1. web/app feature parity
2. ability to send a shared note to another specific micro.blog user w/o needing their email address
3. change bars would be so nice for shared documents!
4. formatted view to (optionally automatically?) include a footer with the creation & updated timestamps
5. would like Strata to show up in the Share sheet of other iOS apps
6. Strata: contextual menu item on shared notes to get the URL
7. I’d like a menu item Convert shared note to blog post (there are a couple of things that would have to be decided at the time e.g. title, keep note, copy blogpost link to clipboard…)
8. it’d be nice to have (listed in the Notebooks directory) a “virtual notebook” of “recently edited notes”
9. on re-opening a note, I would prefer the insertion point return to the place it was when when the Strata app closed it (or, barring that, a preference to default to the end)
10. Add categories and a title field (see point 7)
